Y6 at the Beach

Year 6 visited the beach today, as stimulus for creative writing, imagery and art work.

We had a great time and collected some fantastic shells for art work.

We used all of our senses to create word banks for use back in class. We discussed and created metaphors and similes.

Touching the Void

Amazed, happy, sad, gobsmacked and really proud were the emotions I felt when I watched Touching the Void.  I tried to imagine being Simon, Joe or Richard, I felt pain for Joe, anger and shame for Simon and really nervous for Richard.  The film was spectacular because of the scenery and you really need to be a professional to do that sort of climbing.  It was really inspiring but made me quite scared and I do not want to climb any mountains in my life!  Fingers crossed Freezing

More jokes from Tom

Here’s some more!

Two fish in a tank.
One turns to the other and says “Do you know how to drive this?”

What do you call a monkey in a minefield?
 A Baboom !
A scientist and a philosopher were being chased by a hungry lion. The scientist made some quick calculations; he said “it's no good trying to outrun it, its catching up”.
The philosopher kept a little ahead and replied “I am not trying to outrun the lion, I am trying to outrun you!”
Which day of the week do fish hate?
Fry-Day

Tom shares....some Crackers!

Read these crackers!
1: When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300°C.
 The Russians used a pencil.

2: Why do ducks have webbed feet? To stamp out fires
Why do elephants have flat feet? To stamp out burning ducks
3: Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go on a camping trip.  After a good dinner and a bottle of wine, they retire for the night, and go to sleep.
Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.”
I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes” replies Watson.
And what do you deduce from that?
Watson ponders for a minute.  “Well,
Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets
Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo
Horologic ally, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three.
Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.
Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful, and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe.
But what does it tell you, Holmes?
Holmes is silent for a moment.
Watson, you idiot!” he says.  “Someone has stolen our tent!”

Review of 'Touching the Void' by Rosie

I really enjoyed touching the Void, it was and incredible movie that made me relieved, sad, amazed and of course rather shocked. It was amazing how Joe survived and how much emotion was put into the movie. I can't explain how much pain he must have been in and how put into agony he was. I still think it was a crazily incredible movie I think I could watch it over and over and over again!

TOUCHING THE VOID

We have been watching and discussing Touching the Void. WOW!

To describe it, we used words like:
gripping, emotive, heartwarming, engaging, amazing, action paced, touching and powerful.

We watched in 3 chunks and disucssed it in detail. We all agreed it was an amazing film. Everyone was captivated by it!

It links in with our theme in lots of ways - it was based upon an autobiography, it involved interviews (open questions!), and is linked to the exploration and challenge work (like Adrian Hayes) we are starting to look at it.

We used the opportunity to have superb discussions about the powerful description of both the scenary and, perhaps more inportantly, the emotions the people in the film experienced.
Beautiful scenery and excellent cinematography highlight this true-life story of two young adventurers who, in 1985, attempt to be the first climbers to reach the top of imposing Siula Grande, in Peru. The two actual climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, narrate the story, while two stand-in actors re-enact the climbing.

A big part of the film is Joe's quest merely to survive, once he becomes separated from Simon. Toward this objective, he calls forth inner strength in the form of two mental processes: first, make a decision and then act on it; second, set small goals or targets. During his ordeal a part of him keeps pushing: "You have to do this, this, and this, if you're going to get there; come on, keep moving, keep moving; right, get up, and do it again".

In a docudrama like this, acting ability is not that important. What is important is the cinematography. The mountain scenery is spectacular. The camera also captures visual perspective, by backing away from the two climbers, or Joe alone in the second half, to reveal how small and insignificant they are against the towering mountain face, or lost within the vast expanse of a huge glacier, peppered with a maze of dangerous crevasses.

"Touching The Void" is a great story of survival set amid the majestic splendor of the mountains of Peru.
