I've cracked it - well, with the help of a friend (who is far more clever than me)
Basically, ALL 2-digit numbers will end up divisible by 9 after you do what the lady says. Try it :
eg: 54-5-4 = 45/9 = 5
73 - 7- 3 = 63/9 = 7
11 - 1 - 1 = 9/9 = 1
etc etc
If you look carefully at the grid of presents, you will notice that the boxes of all multiples of 9 ... have the same presents!!! So the lady can never be wrong!
Very clever isn't it?
